Sugarloaf is 90 minutes North of Bakersfield. The road is windy and the parking area is small. The location of Sugarloaf leaves the trails from the parking area to Portuguese Pass covered with snow as they are mostly in the shade. From there, it's a short 8 mile ride to Greenhorn Summit, or you can keep going to the Yurt and beyond, all the way to Ponderosa. The elevation of the trails range from 5,800 feet to over 8,000 feet at Tobias Peak.
Take highway 99 north to Seventh Standard Road. Turn right to Airport Drive. Turn left on Airport Drive which will turns into Granite Road. Just as you are getting close to Glenville, the road “V’s” and merges into 155. Go straight thru stop sign on 155. Take a left on Jack Ranch Road. The road will split, so veer right onto Old Stage Mountain Road just pass the Tulare County Line Sign. The road splits again and you want to stay left on Sugarloaf Drive Mountain. This will take you all the way to the top and continue past the sawmill until you run into the parking area. The road is only cleared to parking area.
