Bob Frenes from the US Forest Service reported the following information.
The trail is groomed from the Sand Shed at 155 and Rancheria to the Sugarloaf Snowpark. Grooming was also completed from Portuguese Pass to just past the Yurt. Snow is good but thin (8-10′) on the Sugarloaf Side. Hopefully more snow will come early next week. The road out of Sugarloaf Snowpark is closed for the winter to wheeled vehicles and the closure sign has been properly placed. Rancheria is closed north of 155 to wheeled vehicles as well. Windy Gap trail on the south side of 155 is open to the Alta Sierra Ski Resort. Crossing 155 is permitted.
Good news! The new gate installed just past Dry Meadow will be opened for over the snow vehicles. This includes side by sides with tracks. No wheeled vehicles are allowed on a winter closure road. There is a washout on highway 190 so they are keeping the western divide open for an alternate way in and out of Ponderosa, and prevents over the snow travel to Ponderosa.
Bob reported 12 feet of snow at the Kern Plateau on the Sherman Pass side for your riding pleasure.
There will be no tickets given for crossing streets/roads open to wheeled vehicles.
Ride safe out there and have fun!
